Shattered captures the audience’s attention in the opening scene. It depicts a vehicle racing wildly down a treacherous road on a dark night. The car recklessly passes another vehicle then suddenly swerves; narrowly missing an oncoming van. Brakes squeal and the vehicle spins wildly out of control and crashes. The storyline continues with a series of flashbacks from earlier that evening. We visit three teenage friends, Ray, Melanie and Cece, hanging out after a concert. Melanie, the designated driver, has been coaxed into drinking and smoking pot.

Across town, Lily, Sarah, Chantel and Joel were supposed to attend a movie but are drinking in the alley outside the theatre instead. Lily’s parents are at home waiting for her to call for a ride home. Dad is totally absorbed in his TV show and mom is trying to unwind with a few drinks after a stressful day at the office.
Just outside of town, Dylan and Shannon are with a group of high school friends at a bush party. Dylan has had way too much to drink and can barely stand but Shannon is sober. She leads with him to give her the keys but Dylan isn’t ready to leave, or to give up his keys.
All of these groups will get into a vehicle that night. The plots begin to unfold: one of the teens throws his keys away so no one can drive drunk; one of the teens is pulled over by the police and arrested before tragedy strikes; and one of the teens will never make it home alive.
As these scenes develop, we see yet another group of people meeting in a church basement. It’s a diverse group of teens and adults gathered to share their thoughts and feelings about the events that brought them together in this support group. They are real victims of impaired driving telling their stories about their loved ones who were killed or injured in events much like those in the dramatizations.
They all have one thing in common; an impaired driving crash changed each of their lives forever.
