Help Canadian Educators provide children with life strategies to say NO to Alcohol and Drugs, Handle Peer Pressure and Stay Safe

Road Crashes, Impaired Driving and Youth

  • Road crashes are the number one cause of youth death in Canada.
  • One in eight deaths and injuries from road crashes is a youth.
  • On average, every day in Canada just under 4 people are killed and 187 are seriously injured from an impaired driving crash.
  • 1 out of the 4 Canadians killed is under the age of 24

Impaired driving is the number one PREVENTABLE cause of death among youth in Canada.

Alcohol and Drug Use in Childhood

We know that the problem of impaired driving is part of a growing problem of substance abuse amongst youth and that alcohol consumption begins at a very early age. Studies show us that young people who drink alcohol before the age of 15 are four times more likely to develop alcohol dependency than those who wait until 21.

In 2003, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health’s Ontario Student Drug Use Survey found that the use of alcohol and cannabis starts as early as age 11. MADD Canada’s program is designed to educate youth about the risk of harm associated with alcohol and drug use and help them form beliefs and opinions about alcohol and drugs as well as impaired driving before they are faced with peer pressure.

Youth education is a critical part of MADD Canada’s strategy to preventing impaired driving. We understand that the long-term solution to the problem of impaired driving is to get our message out while youth are forming beliefs and patterns of behaviour. Your support of this program will encourage a life-long habit of responsible and safe behaviour.

MADD Scientist and the Quest for Power

MADD Scientist and the Quest for Power is the title of MADD Canada’s elementary school program geared to students in grades 3-6. This classroom DVD should be used with the activity guide. To download the activity guide click here. Elementary school children will relate to the characters in this show and the interactive nature of the presentation. MADD Scientist and the Quest for Power introduces the concepts that the Brain, the Heart and Guts are what give you Power and if the students can find out how to get those things they will earn their Power Badges. As MADD Scientist and the Quest for Power explains, “it’s all there inside you, but you need to figure it out”. The game takes us into different 2D environments where we meet a variety of people who impart knowledge through interview segments.

Changing Youth Behaviour and Promoting Positive Values

Students learn about refusal skills and how to protect themselves from an unsafe driver. The RCMP Safety Bear talks about how to ride safely while in a car or a school bus.

Dr. Charles Tator, from the Think First Foundation demonstrates the importance of wearing a helmet, and the risks associated with brain injuries.

Hana Kadri – A Community Hero who stopped a drunk driving and was awarded for her action when she called the police after she realized that the driver of her school bus was impaired.

Powerful Story Shows that Alcohol Mixed with Cars are a Deadly Cocktail

In this real-life victim story, a young boy talks about helping his 16-year-old older brother to deceive their parents so his brother could have a house party where alcohol was being consumed. The older brother consumes alcohol, decides to take his dad’s car for a spin around the block and is killed when he loses control and hits a tree. The younger brother talks about how he feels now about his role that evening. Could he have prevented the tragedy if he had told his parents about the party?

Peer Pressure, Risk Taking and Healthy Attitudes

Craig Keilburger, founder of Free the Children, gives his interview with a message of empowerment on how youth really can make a difference.

Adam Van Koeverden, Olympic kayak champion, shares a message of determination and ways anyone can achieve their dreams.
