Terry Ryan Memorial Award for Excellence in Police Services.

2010 National Winner – Cst. John Reurink, Ontario Provincial Police, Lambton County Detachment, ON

Constable Reurink has worked tirelessly in support of removing impaired drivers off the roads, and in support of MADD Canada’s goals. The number of activities, events and initiatives that Constable Reurink helps plan, support or organize truly are limitless. He attends every primary and secondary school in the area, giving MADD Canada’s multi-media presentation and connecting with these impressionable young people.

It is clearly evident that Constable John Reurink has devoted much of his time, and his life, to raising awareness about the dangers of impaired driving. He reaches out regularly to a cross-section of the community, in all corners of Sarnia-Lambton and sends out a clear message about the dangers of impaired driving.

2009 National Winner - Sgt. Evan Scott, Rothesay Regional Police Force, NB

Sgt. Scott has experienced a long and dedicated career in policing with most of his time directed towards initiatives that serve to make our highways safer. Over the past several years he has taken a particular interest in reducing the incidents of impaired driving on our highways. He serves on several Provincial Public Safety and Policing Traffic Committees and takes every opportunity he can to promote the reduction of impaired driving in the Province. He was instrumental in working with Government officials in bringing about the administrative license suspensions that were recently introduced through the Legislature in New Brunswick and has developed a very good working relationship with MADD Canada on a further campaign which will see significant signage on our highways encouraging the motoring public to report potential impaired drivers.

2009 Regional Award Winners

BC/Yukon Region - Sgt. Carolin Luchuck, Vancouver Island RCMP, BC

Sergeant Luchuck is assigned to the “Road Side Safety Unit”. Last year, she took it upon herself to contact all Police Liaisons at each of the local high schools and promote MADD Canada’s 2008/09 Multi-Media Presentation. She is the lead contact for Road checks and offers her support whenever possible. Not only does she do an exemplary job to get impaired drivers off the roads, she travels around Canada teaching other officers how to identify drug impairment.

Prairie Provinces/Northwest Territories/Nunavut Region - Sgt. Ron Russell, Wynyard RCMP, SK

Sgt. Ron Russell arrived in the east-central town last July during the month when alcohol-involved crashes and injuries reached a peak in Saskatchewan. He was determined to do something about it. Since he has been working in town, the number of impaired driving charges and tickets for liquor license violations has nearly doubled.

Ontario West Region - Sgt. Derek Davis, Halton Regional Police, ON

Sergeant Davis has been the Halton Regional Police Service's District Response Sergeant responsible for traffic enforcement for two years. Sergeant Davis has consistently projected through his team that reports of impaired driving are to be held in a higher regard than their planned responses to community traffic issues. His team is expected to respond to reports of impaired driving and are more experienced and trained in the area of impaired driving investigations.

Ontario East Region - Sgt. Robert Martin, York Regional Police, ON

Sgt. Martin has seen first hand the devastation of impaired crashes and as a result, has been committed to educating students in high schools about the dangers of driving impaired, particularly during Prom season. He saw this age group as being at high risk to consume alcohol and/or drugs and drive.

Atlantic Region – Sgt. Evan Scott, Rothesay Regional Police Force, NB
