Fundraiser of the Year Award

MADD Canada is pleased to announce a new award category. In this new platform, there will be  awards presented to an individual or Chapter for outstanding fundraising results.

The Fundraiser of the Year Award will be presented annually at MADD Canada’s Chapter Leadership Conference to recognize an outstanding fundraising volunteer/chapter contribution.

Purpose

To recognize individuals or Chapters within MADD Canada who demonstrate outstanding fundraising leadership.  All across the country, we have outstanding fundraising volunteers who demonstrate creativity and innovation in their fundraising. In addition to promoting our mission, they also bring in a significant source of revenue for the Chapter. 

MADD Canada is pleased to be able to offer Regional Awards, as well as, a National Fundraiser of the Year Award. There are 6 regions: BC/Yukon, Prairie Provinces/ NWT/Nunavut, Ontario West, Ontario East, Quebec and Atlantic. The regional winners will be chosen by a national panel of judges. The National Fundraiser of the Year Award will be chosen from the regional award winners.

To nominate your outstanding fundraising volunteer or Chapter, please submit the application form to the Director of Programs by June 30th.  

Criteria
  • Must be a member/volunteer of MADD Canada.
  • Must be nominated by a Chapter, or a member of the National Board or a National staff member.
  • Any voting member of the National Board is ineligible. (National President, President Elect and Past President are not voting members of the National Board).

Nominations will be judged according to the following:

  • Creativity/Innovation
  • New source of revenue for the Chapter
  • Amount raised compared to the overall budget of the Chapter
  • Long term legacy impact of the fundraising
  • Involvement of other partners in the community

To make a nomination, the nomination form must be signed by two members of the Chapter Executive. Additional information may be added to support the nomination.

Application Requirements
  • Applications must be received no later than June 30th.
  • Nominations may include letters of support or newspaper articles, which further support why the nominee should receive the Fundraiser of the Year Award.
Form of Award
  • A perpetual plaque containing the winners’ names will be displayed at the National Office and a keeper award will be given to the winners.
  • An announcement will be placed in MADD Matters (MADD Canada’s National newsletter), in MADD Canada’s Annual Report and on the MADD Canada website.

Selection Process

  • The nominations will be forwarded to the National Awards Selection Committee. The committee will select the Regional and National Award winners.

2010 National Award Winner - MADD Sarnia/Lambton

MADD Sarnia/Lambton organized a “Voluntary Toll” Fundraising event, which was held consecutively at 13 commercial parking lots across the region on a Saturday, after the Chapter’s official launch of Project Red Ribbon. A total of 12 Sarnia OPP and one Sarnia Police Officer donated their time and were located at each of the sites. In cooperation with Lambton College, 50 students volunteered and were deployed across the 13 locations.
With two student volunteers holding signage and one police personnel giving out MADD materials at each location – they held a fun, low cost event which raised $14,000.00 for the Chapter.


2009 National & Atlantic Region Award Winner - MADD Saint John Chapter

The Saint John Chapter has had 3 successful fundraisers this year, Strides for Change, Grocery Bagging and a Sobey’s “round up”, where customers are asked to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar, with the excess portion going to the Chapter. The total raised from these 3 events is in excess of $13,000.


2008 National Award Winner
Margaret Miller, MADD Cobequid, NS

Margaret’s infectious forward-moving, can-do personality has radiated and inspired volunteers and sponsors.  The Cst. Bruce Miller Memorial Golf Tournament was initiated in 2006, and has become a vehicle of change that motivates local politicians to take a more aggressive role on the issue of impaired driving. This tournament continues to grow and gain recognition in Nova Scotia.  The MADD Cobequid Chapter no longer has to look for participants, and this year the tournament raised over $16,000.  Because of her Margaret’s efforts, MADD Cobequid is able to continue to independently support victims and raise awareness in our community.   Thank you Margaret for your tireless efforts!

2008 Regional Winners

Ontario West Region- Janine Chute, MADD London 

As the fundraising director for the MADD London Chapter, Janine spear-headed MADD London’s first “Drive for Life” Golf Tournament and Silent Auction, and co-chaired the “Strides for Change” committee. She found sponsors to donate all of the food items for the barbecue, solicited prizes for top fundraisers, and was instrumental in getting the best possible radio advertising for these very successful events.  Great job, Congratulations!

Ontario East Region -  MADD Durham Region

MADD Durham region held its 8th Annual “Olde Tyme Charity Auction” in June. ALL auction items and services are donated, and include Durham Regional Police helicopter Ride a-longs, and signed Olympic hockey jerseys.  The auction has raised approximately $90,000 for the Chapter since its inception 8 years ago.  The auction is a community event that is highly anticipated and continues to grow every year. Congratulations to MADD Durham Region members and volunteers for another successful year!

2007 National Award Winner

Lisa Davis, Community Leader, Labrador Straits, NL

Thanks to Lisa's hard work and dedication, students across Labrador will have the opportunity to see the MADD Canada's high school and elementary multi-media presentations "Friday Night" and "Ace", this school year for the first time. Lisa was able to secure a $30,000 grant from the International Grenfell Association to ensure the success of her project, entitled "HelpSave Lives by Reaching Today's Youth". Thanks Lisa for all you have done for the youth in Labrador!

2007 Regional Winners

Ontario West Region: Wayne & Christ Horst, “Gray Family Memorial Volleyball Tournament”

Wayne & Chris, along with a group of friends have spear headed this tournament since 2001, securing prize and food donations from the local community.  To date, $14,000 has been raised for the MADD St. Thomas Chapter.  Congratulations to Wayne & Chris Horst on this most successful endeavour.

Ontario East Region: MADD Kawartha Lakes

This Chapter participated in two successful fundraisers this year, first the Grocery Bagging Day fundraiser which raised $1,500 in just a few short hours, and their second annual Strides for Change Walk that raised more than $4,500! Congratulations to MADD Kawartha Lakes members and volunteers for another successful year!

2006 National Award Winner

MADD Cape Breton Chapter, Strides for Change.

Patricia Smits took the leadership on this event and with her team put it together in 6 weeks. The Chapter raised over $19,000 after all bills were paid! Excellent work Patricia and congratulations to you and all the Chapter members.

2006 Regional Winners

Ontario East Region: MADD Kawartha Lakes, Strides for Change

This Chapter had a very successful walk, in spite of the rain, with 45 walkers and $4,900 raised! Congratulations to MADD Kawartha Lakes members and volunteers!

MADD Edmonton and Area Chapter Golf Tournament Committee

This year the Chapter held its 4th annual tournament. They increased the number of golfers from 100 in the previous year to 140. Last year they made a $3,000 profit and this year netted around $15,000...quintupling their profit in one year. They attribute their success to making this event more personal. There were photos of victims on the entry forms and every tee box. The breakfast and steak dinner were dedicated to victims of impaired driving and paid for by corporate sponsorship. Edmonton City Police sponsored them for $5,000. Behind it all was a team of wonderful volunteers who made it happen. Congratulations!

MADD London Chapter, Strides for Change

In May of this year, this Chapter launched its First Annual strides for Change. Strides for Change templates were adapted to reflect their goals of Remembering Victims and Raising Awareness. This event energized the Chapter. They built community partnerships with community sponsors, enlisted media support, recruited more volunteers to participate and laid the groundwork for future Strides for Change events in London and throughout the country. This first walkathon, planned within a relatively short time raised $10,266 almost one-third of the Chapter's 2004-2005 income. Way to go London!
