Volunteers - The John G. Bates Volunteer of the Year Award

The John G. Bates Volunteer of the Year Award is presented annually at MADD Canada's Chapter Leadership Conference to recognize an outstanding volunteer contribution. The Award recognizes individuals within MADD Canada who demonstrate volunteerism by a self-sacrificial giving of their time and talents in pursuit of our mission without expectation of reward. To be eligible the individual must be a member of MADD Canada and must be nominated by a Chapter or a member of the National Board.

2010 National Winner – Charline Manuel, MADD Kent County, NB

Charline Manuel is a victim of impaired driving. Since her crash in 2002, she suffers tremendously because of her injuries, caused by a drunk driver. In the hopes to save lives, Charline shares her story to High School graduates as well as at risk students, at different schools in her region. The awareness she brings to the community is very valuable and it has a great impact. Charline gives of her time and her talents to make sure that the important message is relayed to the youth and adults in the region. Charline has reached over 1,000 people with her story. Even though she is in pain most of the time, she still takes the time to travel to different schools to spread the word that “impaired driving” must stop NOW.

2009 National Winner – Jason Larkin, MADD Barrie/Simcoe, ON

Jason is one of the founding members of the MADD Barrie/Simcoe Chapter, and has been a continuous pillar of strength. One of Jason’s proudest accomplishments is the initiation of “Safe Roads…Your Call”, launched in April 2008. He worked tirelessly with police, community councils and other community partners to bring this program to Simcoe County. Through his efforts, there are more than 200 signs around the county, and in neighbouring communities, urging the public to call 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver. Jason has personally used “Safe Roads…Your Call” to affect the arrest of three impaired drivers during his own travels.

2009 Regional Award Winners:

BC/Yukon Region – Bob Rorison, MADD Metro Vancouver, BC

Bob has been instrumental in the re-development and continued existence of the MADD Metro Vancouver Chapter. After losing seven long standing board members, Bob was asked to come back as interim president to be the local champion of the chapter. He stepped into a very difficult situation! In less than 1 year, the MADD Metro Vancouver Chapter is fully functional and growing leaps and bounds. None of this would have happened without Bob.

Ontario East Region – Jason Larkin, MADD Barrie/Simcoe, ON

As above (National Winner)

Quebec Region - James Lawler, MADD Montreal Chapter

Despite his busy career, James managed the change-over from a Chapter office to a home office, organizing telephones and banking and manning kiosks at fairs. He’s recruited volunteers, personally telephoned victims to invite them to attend the local vigil, and does interviews for the media. If James had not stepped up to the plate, MADD Montreal might not be functional today.

Atlantic Region - Gloria MacNeill, MADD East Prince County, PE

Gloria joined MADD after the death of her son Adam in June of 2002. She has done numerous school presentations, including multimedia and safe grad. She has arranged for sobriety road checks with the police and participated in many public awareness events. Her chapter hosted a very successful 2009 Atlantic Regional Conference and Vigil, with Gloria taking the lead.
