Services for Victims

Court accompaniment and support during the criminal trial process

Many Chapters offer court support to help families and friends understand the judicial proceedings and to be available to them during this traumatic experience. MADD Canada has trained volunteers at the Chapter level to assist victims with everything from writing and delivering their impact statements, to encouraging a liaison with Crown attorneys, police and other professionals.

Helping victims know their rights under the law

MADD Canada can serve as a resource for victims who have questions about their rights within the judicial system or about the judicial process. MADD Canada has compiled a glossary of legal terms, which can help with legal terms that are often used.

Referrals

To other community groups/agencies for assistance (eg. if counselling is required or legal assistance).

MADD Canada has prepared resource guides to help victims of crime, specifically victims of impaired driving crimes, locate the resources they need to help them deal with the criminal justice process and the various networks of services and programs. We have provided the most up to date contact information for victims, for both federal and provincial resources. The resource guide is available as a PDF.

Emotional support

Annual Candlelight Vigil of Hope and Remembrance & Victims' Weekend

Both of these special events provide the chance for victims to come together to honour and remember their loved one(s) - the Victims' Weekend includes educational presentations by professionals in the community on areas related to but not limited to grief, bereavement and coping with injury. Highlights from 2009 and registration information for the upcoming 2010 Victims' Weekend & Candlelight Vigil are now available.

Memorial Wall

Victims or their families may submit a photo to MADD Canada to have placed on the memorial wall at the National Office. The memorial wall was established as a way to honour and remember those who have been killed or injured in impaired driving crashes.

For more information on the Memorial Wall, creating tributes for a loved one or acknowledgement of injuries, contact Gloria Appleby, Victim Services Manager, gappleby@madd.ca or 1-800-665-6233 and she will send you the necessary waiver.

On-line Tribute to Victims

Victims or their families may submit a tribute to their loved one to MADD Canada to be placed in the website's online Victims' Tribute section.

The online Victims' Tribute was created out of MADD Canada's commitment to, and respect for those whose lives have been changed forever as a result of impaired driving. These personalized tributes give victims of impaired driving both a voice and face to acknowledge the reality of their loss, and helps bring that reality to a society numbed by statistics.

Individuals have only been added at the specific request of the families.

For more information about creating a tribute for a loved one, please contact our Victim Services Manager at gappleby@madd.ca. Be sure to include your name and mailing address so that an information package can be sent to you.

Advocating for victim rights in law

MADD Canada is currently calling on the Federal Government to establish and enact a National Victims' Bill of Rights. It would include fundamental principles for the victim, such as the right to be kept informed of all proceedings and the right to be present and to be heard at every stage of the judicial process. MADD Canada wants all victims to be treated with dignity and respect.
