Police program leads to 34 DUI charges

A new program encouraging people to report suspected impaired drivers has been a great success thus far, police and government officials say.

Saskatoon police have received close to 750 calls from the public since the Report Impaired Drivers (RID) program was launched in March, according to a news release issued Monday.

Those calls led to 45 impaired driving charges.

RID is a partnership that includes SGI, Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA), Saskatoon city police, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Students Against Drunk Driving and Rawlco Radio.

City police handle reports from the public through the 911 system. In cases where officers can't immediately locate the vehicle, a letter is mailed to the registered owner advising that a report was made to police.

Motorists who suspect another driver is impaired are asked to have a passenger make the 911 call or pull over safely before dialing.
