TRENTON – Don’t be surprised if your car is stopped as you’re heading home from work on Friday – but don’t worry too much. They just want to tie a red ribbon around your antenna.
Local police and members of the Pictou County chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving will be out in full force to launch this year’s Red Ribbon campaign, which serves as a visual reminder to motorist that it’s not acceptable to drink and drive during the upcoming holiday season.
“The ribbon symbolizes awareness,” said Claire Timmons, president of the local chapter. “People who might consider drinking and driving might not, because the support of MADD is so widespread now.”
That, combined with extensive education campaigns aimed at young people, is helping to reduce the number of drunk driving incidents, she said.
Now in its seventh year in the county, the group intends to set up a display in the mall before the holidays to pass out the ribbons.
Red ribbon donation boxes will also be set up throughout the county over the next few days, with all proceeds going directly to the Pictou County chapter of MADD.
