Antigonish MADD Chapter recognizes National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims
November 5, 2009 - On Wednesday, November 18th, the Antigonish MADD Chapter will host a remembrance ceremony at St. Ninian’s Place, Antigonish from 10:00 to 12:00 to commemorate Canada’s National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims in Canada. The Antigonish MADD Chapter will also be launching their Project Red Ribbon Campaign during this event.
Nearly 3,000 people are killed each year on Canada’s roads and highways – another 200,000 are hurt – often seriously. That’s an average of eight deaths, every day. The National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims is on the third Wednesday of November. It commemorates those who have died or been injured on Canada’s roads, along with their families, friends and colleagues who must live with tragic loss or suffering. Losing someone in such a sudden way is very painful, so this special day not only recognizes the survivors’ grief and pain, but also acts as a reminder of the importance of road safety in preventing future deaths and injuries.
MADD Canada’s Project Red Ribbon is a commitment by Canadians to drive safe and sober. It is a highly visible, community public awareness program which depends on volunteer participation to promote the message that deaths and injuries resulting from impaired driving are needless tragedies and totally preventable.
Each year, from the beginning of November to the first Monday after January 1st, MADD Canada volunteers across the country distribute red ribbons and ask Canadians to display a ribbon on their vehicle or keychain, or on a personal item like their purse, briefcase or backpack. The MADD Canada red ribbon is a significant symbol. By displaying this ribbon, you are making a personal commitment to drive sober. A red ribbon is a sign of respect for the thousands of Canadians who have lost their lives or who have been injured as a result of impaired driving. The red ribbon also reinforces the message to drive sober through the holidays and throughout the year.
The Antigonish MADD Chapter will combine these two events to raise public awareness to road safety issues. Everyone is welcome to attend this ceremony. MADD Canada red ribbons will be available at many local businesses in the area until January.
